Rob Jeffers – BodyAware Specialist

When I think of the many reasons why people come to The BodyHoliday, health and fitness are at the top of my list (along with great daily included treatments of course!). Just from reading different comments and from talking to loads of people, some of whom are returning guests, I get a sense that The BodyHoliday does a lot to help its guests meet this goal.

On my way over to the Deli for one of those irresistible Paninis, I meet Rob; he was just wrapping up a nutritional consultation. I immediately realized – here’s the chance to confirm my thoughts. Rob sees BodyAware as more than just a programme, he sees it as a lifestyle! He describes it as a complete mind and body overhaul that will improve a person’s lifestyle through optimal nutrition, effective exercise and behavior change. He thinks that the BodyAware programme is the ideal answer.

This guy really knows his stuff; he has a Post Graduate Certificate in Diet Therapy, a BSc in Sports Science Exercise Physiology, and Diploma in Advanced Personal Training. He brings both a scientific and practical approach to the programme. The scientific part is pretty straightforward and the practical part comes from his years of fitness and nutrition experience. Rob tells me that he started off at the junior level – swimming, playing cricket and hockey at county level. He also played basketball at university level and in the national league – impressive stuff.

His goal with BodyAware is remarkable. It is to tie in a holistic approach with behavioural change strategies to help people successfully break out of bad habits including smoking, drinking and overeating and then form good ones. He wanted to ensure that I understood that behaviour should be a core element of any exercise plan. I get the impression that he sees himself as more than just a trainer – he agrees, and tells me that he sees himself as a holistic health coach, personal trainer, nutritionist and therapist.

Enough about the man, I now need to find out more about the programme. So today I set myself a new goal – appoint Rob as my personal holistic health coach. I can already imagine the shock waves when I announce to my friends that I have appointed a personal trainer, who from now on will be my nutritionist and therapist. Of course I shall keep you posted on these developments while I sojourn here at The BodyHoliday…

Richard Lovett – Chef Extraordinaire

My compliments to the chef! I enjoyed a lovely Russian Salad at Cariblue restaurant last night – diced potatoes and vegetables bound in low fat mayonnaise and topped with a soft poached egg, beetroot and light herb dressing (just describing it makes me hungry all over again!). I slipped into the kitchen to find out who was the mastermind behind this simple yet exquisite appetizer (yes, this was only the appetizer!).

Richard Lovett is the Executive Chef at The BodyHoliday and I am his newest fan. I whipped up the nerve to follow him into his office in the main kitchen because I want to find out about “the man behind the great food”. I learnt that Richard had taken the culinary helm four months ago. Interestingly enough, he was previously employed as the Director of Catering for Sunswept Resorts (parent company of The BodyHoliday). He felt the need to be directly involved in the kitchen’s production and output. Why? Richard is a man who simply loves cooking!

The more I spoke with him the clearer it became to me that he really has a passion for food and cooking. His approach to cooking takes him deeper than just appearances. He looks past this and ensures that the texture, flavour and aroma are en par with the appearance. Proudly, he remarks that in the past four months, he has completely changed the menu. Freshness and quality of ingredients are at the top of his list. Of course I completely agree with this – but what do I know about cooking?!

I mean it is one thing to look at a dish that seems near perfect and then to experience the disappointment that comes from an epic let down in the flavour department. Chef has complete control over this – he visits the local market often to hand pick fresh, local organic ingredients for his dishes. All of the yummy breads and pastries are made by the Pastry department…good job guys!

And what of themed lunches? This is his idea to mix it up and take his guests on a culinary adventure to keep lunch varied and not boring. That’s actually a really good idea and many of the guests I’ve spoken with concur!

The beautiful thing about this resort is that you can enjoy healthy options when you need to and indulge the other heavenly pleasures when you want to. I can attest to that! Incidentally, Richard tells me that The BodyHoliday welcomes many guests with special dietary requirements, requests and food allergies as well. This man goes above and beyond to meet these needs. He reminisces about the ‘Raw Food Diet’ where one of his guests could not have food heated above 65°C. He did his research and successfully accommodated her. I like the fact that he constantly updates and increases his knowledge of food and food trends!

Till we meet again chef…I think I need to get a Chocolate Fondant now!

Agustin Aguerreberry – Master Yoga Instructor

When I met up with Agustin today, grains of sand were in his hair and about his body – I asked why. Well – he had just finished a yoga session on the beach. And as it often seems to happen; it was the beginning of another great chat. Of course, I had to find out how an ex-professional athlete becomes a Master Yoga instructor (they don’t seem to be linked). His story, and he is sticking to it, is that his roots in yoga can be traced to therapy he received in Hong Kong for an injury. More to my surprise, he tells me he always desired to move with more agility and skill because he “thought” he was clumsy before – now really… I thought for a while about that one – a clumsy professional athlete?

I needed, at this point, to find out just how deep he was into the whole idea of yoga – he is, after all, a Master Instructor. And so my lessons begin. He wanted me to know that yoga is more than stretching and physical exercise, (of course that would have been good enough for me) but it is mental too! He explained to me that it is a preparation of the body and purification of the mind to get to a higher level of consciousness (question answered – he really is deep). He actually teaches a number of yoga styles with levels varying from beginner to more advanced: Vinyasa yoga, Samba Yoga, Hatha Yoga, Pure Core Yoga, Hatha Raja Yoga, Slow Flow Yoga, Acro-Yoga, Psychic Development Yoga, Power Vinyasa Yoga, Dharma Mitra I Yoga, Pure Core Yoga, Circle Ceremony Yoga and Partner Flow Yoga. Okay, okay so I do not know what any of these are about, but at least I began to understand more now why he is Yoga Master. Maybe I should seriously consider this yoga thing; hmmm. I have visions of me in a Power Vinyasa Yoga class, or not!

Agustin pointed out to me that he passes on his knowledge and guides people to do things that they would normally be too busy limiting themselves to do. I can’t let this one go…I must find out just how much of the hidden potential one can truly unlock in people and how this can be done. Luckily, Agustin is here until June so I plan on bumping into him again, but quite by accident … of course. I think we’ll speak again next week… Now he doesn’t know it yet, but I might even drop by one of his sessions too! Am I becoming an aficionado already?

The BodyHoliday LeSPORT adds value and welcomes Matt Charlton and Osteopathy

Since The BodyHoliday LeSPORT first started, the resort has always tried to create an experience that balances health, wellbeing and nutrition with relaxation and fun. The belief has always been that any holiday is a genuine opportunity to recharge batteries by making sure that the body is fighting fit. ‘Give us your body for a week and we will give you back your mind’. This has been the approach since those early days and it still holds true.

This is why Matt Charlton – who graduated with a Masters of Osteopathy (M.Ost) from the British School of Osteopathy (BSO), the largest and oldest osteopathic college in the UK – is the newest addition to the cadre of expertise at The BodyHoliday. Ultimately, Matt says, his goal is to help his patients become more aware of their bodies; to use this awareness to consciously and actively assist the body in healing itself.

After picking up a rugby injury in his late teens Matt experienced his first osteopathic treatment. Four things were immediately clear:

  • His practitioner was always relaxed and confident
  • Her explanations were always clear and precise
  • The treatments were interesting and varied
  • His recovery was quick

These are the qualities that Matt consciously instills in his own practice. As part of his ongoing professional development, Matt has attended courses in Neuromuscular Rehabilitation; Cadaver Studies and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). This broad range of interests allows Matt to integrate a combination of approaches, helping him further tailor treatments to his patients’ needs.

Matt is an avid sportsman, regularly running and swimming. He has recently discovered the health benefits of Bikram Yoga and has spent time in India working on a health and hygiene book for charity.

Matt is registered with the General Osteopathic Council (GOSc) and the British Osteopathic Association (BOA).

What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a system of diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of medical conditions. It works with the structure and function of the body, and is based on the principle that the well-being of an individual depends on the skeleton, muscles, ligaments and connective tissues functioning smoothly together.

Who and what Osteopaths treat

Patients often represent a wide cross section of the populace, ranging from young to pregnant women, children and sports people. Patients seek treatment for a wide variety of conditions such as:

  • Low Back pain
  • Sciatica
  • Neck and Upper Back pain
  • Shoulder, Elbow, Wrist, Hand, Hip, Knee and Foot pain
  • Jaw pain
  • Headaches
  • Sports injuries
  • Repetitive Strain injuries
  • Work-related injuries
  • Postural problems
  • The pain of arthritis
  • Effects of trauma (e.g. whiplash)
  • Musculo-skeletal symptoms associated with chronic conditions (e.g.
  • asthma, osteoarthritis)

Toby Maguire And Taoist Practices for Health and Longevity – New to The BodyHoliday LeSport

The BodyHoliday LeSPORT is no ordinary resort. It is totally dedicated to health and wellbeing and is based around the four key pillars of diet, exercise, restorative beauty and relaxation. We are always trying to add to our portfolio of events and this year weare very excited to have Toby Maguire at the resort. Toby Maguire has been practicingthe healing arts of the East for nearly twenty years and has spent the last ten years traveling South East Asia studying Tai Chi, Qi Gong, Meditation, Massage and the Taoist approach to nutritional healing. He is qualified in Nutrition and Holistic Wellness.

If you are looking for a new approach or simply some motivation to get healthy again, then Toby will have you up and about in no time.

Toby brings with him a wealth of knowledge in a number of areas including Chi Nei Tsang. This is an internal organs and abdominal massage that helps to clear and detoxify blockages in the large and small intestine caused by emotional stress and poor dietary habits. When this occurs, all vital functions stagnate, resulting in digestive disorders such as bloating, gas, IBS, and constipation. Chi Nei Tsang releases the negative emotion, tensions and sickness bringing comfort and relief to the abdomen and vital energy to the organs.

He is also well versed in the practice of Sujok which is also referred to as Korean Hand and Foot Acupuncture and uses various methods including very small acupuncture needles to alleviate pain throughout the body. Working on similar principles to both Traditional Chinese Medicine and Reflexology, it can be used to alleviate many sources of pain, including joint pain, arthritis, sciatica, back pain, digestive disorders, muscle stiffness, respiratory and skin conditions.
Qi Gong – (The Eight Piece Brocade) is another area of expertise that Toby brings with him. This is a simple pattern of eight gentle but powerful breathing stretching andstrengthening movements that activate the Qi energy and blood circulation in the body. Practiced in China for over a thousand years, these exercises help to stimulate your immune system, strengthen your internal organs and give you abundant energy.

Among other energy releasing strategies, Toby will present a series of Lifestyle Coaching sessions. If you love what you do, you will never work another day in your life. Life Coaching helps us to look more deeply inside of ourselves to discover our true talents, passions and dreams and how we can achieve them.

Our minds and bodies are very much interconnected and therefore, a positive outlook on life is also vital to secure a sense of happiness and wellbeing. Lifestyle Coaching teaches us how to discover what our talents, dreams and ambitions are in life and how we can achieve them. In addition, it teaches us how to effectively deal with stress and our emotions through meditation and mindfulness.

The BodyHoliday is a holiday unlike any other. Since we first started we have always tried to create an experience that balances health, wellbeing and nutrition with relaxation and fun. Our belief has always been that your holiday is a genuine opportunity to recharge your batteries by making sure that your body is fighting fit.
