So what exactly is a Triathlon?
A triathlon is a multiple-stage competition involving the completion of three continuous and sequential endurance disciplines. In its most popular form, involves swimming, cycling, and running in immediate succession over various distances. Triathletes compete for fastest overall course completion time, including timed “transitions” between the individual swim, cycle, and run components.
So in the wake of the Triathlon’s popularity, St Lucia together with “The Human Race” has organised the first ever St Lucia Triathlon. It is expected that over 500 competitors will participate from all over the world for this inaugural event.
The Dagger: 200m Swim, 5km Bike, 2.5km Run
The Pistol: 750m Swim, 10km Bike, 5km Run
The Cutlass: 1500m Swim, 20km Bike, 10km Run
The swim will be in the beautiful clear waters of Pigeon Island Bay, the sea temperature is expected to be around 27°C so if you are competing, don’t bring your wetsuit (only bring your suntan lotion). Conditions will be very hot and humid.
St Lucia is a hilly volcanic island and the course has been designed to incorporate some tough climbs on a multi lap course. Competitors can expect a challenging, hot bike ride, hence the shorter than normal distance rides.
The run component is a flat out and back loop to the old Fort on Pigeon island. The course will be arrowed and marshaled and the road surfaces of the run course are well maintained asphalt.
A number of celebrities will be in attendance together with British Olympic legend Daley Thompson ( 2 Olympic Gold medals in Decathlon).
