The Health Benefits of Eating Fresh from the Ocean

It’s recommended that adults include fish or shellfish in their meals at least twice per week, whether it’s a tuna sandwich for lunch or a gourmet sushi dinner. Seafood is rich in essential nutrients and offers a variety of health benefits for us, both mental and physical.


Fish is low in saturated fat and high in omega-3 fatty acids, which helps to lower the amount of cholesterol in the bloodstream and reduce your risk of developing heart problems. EPA and DHA omega-3 oil also work to improve circulation, preventing both inflammation and thrombosis. While you can find omega-3 in pill form, your body is able to absorb it better from fresh fish and other seafood.

Improved Eyesight

Eating plenty of fish can also prevent premature macular degeneration brought on by aging. Retinoid compounds found in seafood also help to boost vision. Pregnant women should make sure to include fish and shellfish in their diet to promote healthy eye development in their growing baby.

Younger-Looking Skin

Vitamins, nutrients, and antioxidants found in seafood can help to keep skin looking younger for longer. They fight free radical damage that leads to dull skin, fine lines, and wrinkles. Proteins from the meat keep skin firm and flexible by maintaining the integrity of collagen below the surface. Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish are also great for the skin, offering a degree of UV protection and helping to keep you moisturized. People suffering from eczema or psoriasis should include more seafood in a healthy balanced diet to avoid dry or flaky skin.

Adults who eat a diet high in seafood have been shown to be at a reduced risk of developing Alzheimer’s Disease and related forms of dementia. Seafood also helps to keep the mind sharp on a day-to-day basis by improving concentration and memory. Children can benefit academically from eating fish during the week, as it helps to improve focus, behavior, reading skills, and reduce ADHD symptoms.

Including plenty of seafood in your diet can improve your health in a variety of ways, from an improved memory to glowing skin. As you age, you should make sure to eat fish or shellfish at least a couple times each week to help keep your body fit and your mind active.
